Overview

John Hunter Hospital is a major tertiary referral center and teaching hospital located in New Lambton Heights, Newcastle, NSW. With approximately 700 beds, it is the principal referral center for northern NSW, providing highly specialised services including trauma care, intensive care, specialised surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, oncology, maternity, pediatrics, mental health, and rehabilitation. Operating under Hunter New England Local Health District, John Hunter Hospital serves a catchment population of over 850,000 people. The facility houses a Level 1 trauma center, neonatal intensive care unit, and the John Hunter Children’s Hospital, providing the most comprehensive pediatric services in the region. As a major teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Newcastle, it plays a significant role in medical education and research. The $780 million John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct project is currently underway to further enhance the hospital’s capabilities.
