Cairns Hospital Mental Health Service is a specialised psychiatric facility serving Far North Queensland, providing comprehensive mental healthcare across inpatient and community settings. With approximately 85 dedicated mental health beds, the service provides acute psychiatric care, rehabilitation, child and adolescent mental health services, older persons’ mental health, and forensic mental health services. Operating under Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, the mental health units underwent significant enhancement as part of the broader Cairns Hospital redevelopment. The service employs multidisciplinary teams including psychiatrists, mental health nurses, psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists to deliver integrated care across the region. Cairns Hospital Mental Health Service has developed specialised programs for Indigenous mental health, addressing the unique needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
